Size Range: 24-36 μm wide x 23-34 μm long (Haywood et al. 2004)
Key Characteristics: Cells slightly wider than long, ventrally concave and dorsally convex; apex of the epicone with a prominent apical process; hypocone slightly bilobed; nucleus round and located in left quadrant of hypocone; chloroplasts peripheral and lightly pigmented (Haywood et al. 2004)
Confused With: Karenia papilionacea, which has a more pronounced hypothecal excavation and a more pointed apical protrusion
